Buteyko
Buteyko is a system of breathing exercises used to correct
and alleviate the symptoms of asthma. The system is also used in the treatment
of emphysema, allergies, sinusitis, rhinitis, COPD and hyperventilating.
The system was devised by a Dr Konstantin Buteyko, an honours graduate of the
First Medical Institute in Moscow. During his training, Buteyko had been given
a practical assignment monitoring diseased patients breathing - it was from this
study that his interest in the breath and its effect on the body developed. He
carried out extensive research on the breathing patterns of asthmatics, sufferers
of angina and other diseases, and had successful and positive results. The research
was further developed during his time at the Central and Lenin Medical Libraries.
By the end of the 1960's, Buteyko's method was being used with great success
in clinics all over Russia. The teachings have gradually spread to the West and
are now fairly widely available.
