There are a few potential explanations for past lives.
Some say they are part of our genetic memory (encoded into our DNA in some way). Others suggest that someone enters a past life they are effectively entering what Carl Jung called the Collective unconscious "a concept that part of our unconscious is shared by all people, so that we share all the memories that have ever been."
The explanation that past lives are a dissociative or metaphorical experience that allows a person to safely confront their problems from the current life, and in this way, they create a life in which they can safely deal with the issue also carries some weight with many people. Going a stage further with this particular possibility is something called Cryptomnesia which occurs when a forgotten memory returns without it being recognized as such by the subject, who believes it is something new and original. So a past life subject might put together a story based on something they read 20 years ago, or a film they saw when they were a child.
And of course, there is the concept of reincarnation, an idea that we have all lived before, and in fact keep reincarnating time and time again. Reincarnation is part of the cultural belief system of many people in the world today, as well as part of many others chosen belief system. (see post of 7th March here).
As a regression therapist, I have now worked with thousands of people in many different countries in the world and I safely say that I have seen all of the above playing out in front of me when I have clients in regression.
And I can say with great confidence, the definitive truth of whether the past life the client experiences is real is unimportant; what really matters is the reality that they are experiencing at that moment in time. For that reality is surfacing from their subconscious mind at this time for a reason. As regression therapists, we simply find the client s story that relates to their issue, and then we guide them to transform it.
And when the transformation of that story brings about a change in their current life that relates to their issue, then the truth of the story is largely irrelevant. Powerful and measurable transformation takes places on emotional, physical, psychological and energetic levels that relate to real-life scenarios and that overrides any need to define what is and isn t true or right.
